After a recent avalanche of new phones since Oneplus, Alive, Xiaomi, and others, now it looks like Sony is next with plans to launch a new Xperia phone on April 14th.
Sony bowed recently when they updated the banner on the Xperia YouTube Page while he also reportedly sent invitations to members of the media. Sony’s banner does not give any clues as to the specific device (s) it purports to advertise, but The expectation is that Sony’s new flagship phone will be the Xperia 1 Mark III, with rumors that Sony could bring back the Xperia compact also somehow.
According to the leaks and a render published by Steve Hemmerstofer (aka @OnLeaks), the Xperia 1 III is expected to retain the minimalist design used in previous Xperia phones while featuring specs that could rival Samsung’s Galaxy S21 + or possibly even the S21 Ultra. OnLeaks says the Xperia 1 III will feature a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with very slim bezels and a Zeiss’ T * lens-coated triple rear camera and possibly a Sony-designed periscope-style telephoto camera under the Cybershot brand.
As expected from a high-end phone in 2021, it is also believed in the Xperia 1 III It will come with support for 5G connectivity, along with stereo speakers, an additional shortcut button (which could also double as a dedicated camera shutter button), and a fingerprint sensor built into the phone’s power button.

Notably, the Xperia 1 III is also rumored to include a dedicated 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot, which are two features that Samsung has dropped on recent Galaxy S phones. For me this says Sony in a very interesting position because for the first time in years, the Xperia line could be the best alternative to Popular Samsung flagship phones, especially with LG appears to be on the verge of pulling out of the mobile phone business.
According to the Chinese leaker ZACKBUKS (via TechRadar), other Xperia 1 III specs including a 120Hz refresh rate for its 6.5-inch display, a Snapdragon 888 chip, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage (or more depending on settings).
Sadly, there is much less information on the rumored Xperia Compact, other than that it has a 5.5-inch screen, which is slightly larger than the previous one. iPhone 12 Mini 5.4-inch screen, but only slightly smaller than something like the Pixel 5 with its 6-inch screen. And in case that’s not enough, there’s a chance Sony will also announce Refurbished phones for the Xperia 5 and Xperia 10 lines at your event as well.
Regardless, if Sony can continue to take advantage of the fantastic technology it puts into its high-end mirrorless cameras while adding a ton of premium features and increasing carrier support in the US, the Xperia 1 Mark III could be exactly what it is. Sony needs to make a big comeback in the smartphone market.
