Snow makes rare appearance in San Antonio

Snow made a “rare” appearance in San Antonio and Southwest Texas on Thursday evening, blanketing everything from cars and homes to area roadways.

Throughout downtown, people could be seen standing in doorways with phones in hand. Others donned their winter apparel to venture out into the snowfall.

Meanwhile, the snow downed power lines, interrupting service, and led to later start times for some schools, universities and military installations.

National Weather Service meteorologist Eric Platt said Stone Oak residents reported up to an inch of snow had fallen by 7:30 p.m.

A Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland area weather observer told the service he had a quarter- to a half-inch of snow on the grbady surfaces around him.

Meteorologist Brett Williams said the snow had not been expected to accumulate based on their initial weather forecasts. However, there was an undetected weather event that generated more snow than they predicted.

“We knew it was going to be below freezing tonight, but it wasn’t supposed to happen until a little bit later,” Williams said. “With temperatures at about … 40 degrees by 5 p.m., the transition from rain to sleet to snow happened a lot quicker.”

Observers reported snow falling in parts of Boerne and San Antonio during the early evening hours. The National Weather Service’s Austin-San Antonio office received reports of a mixture of rain and snow falling near Canyon Lake in Comal County, along with sleet and rain on the west side of New Braunfels. Sleet also was reported near Del Rio.

Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Laura Lopez urged caution to those who still have to drive to work in the morning.

“We’re not used to having this kind of weather during a winter season,” Lopez said. “We want to remind people that if you’re going to be traveling, check those traffic conditions before heading out on the road.”

“Snowfall is a rare occurrence in the winter time,” Platt said. “If you don’t have to get out and drive, then don’t.”

San Antonio Police and Bexar County deputies could be heard responding to accidents Thursday evening, reporting slushy road conditions in some areas.

Thursday evening, a handful of area schools and universities had issued a delayed start for Friday. Starting at 10 a.m. instead of the usual time are all locations of University of the Incarnate Word, Incarnate Word High School and St. Anthony High School, and UT Health San Antonio and Texas A&M University-San Antonio campuses. The University of Texas at San Antonio announced that all campuses will open at noon. Trinity University announced it was adjusting its final exam schedule for Friday, delaying the first exam period by an hour and the second by a half-hour.

Other school districts said Thursday evening they were monitoring conditions. They advised parents to check their websites, school social media outlets or media for information on any delays or closures.

Winter driving tips

Slow down. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.

Maintain at least three times the normal following distance on snow or ice.

Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpbades and shaded areas as they tend to freeze first. If your vehicle starts to slide, ease off the gas pedal or brakes.

Steer into the direction of the skid until you have regained traction. Then straighten your vehicle.

UT Health essential and clinical staff should plan on reporting for their shifts but contact their supervisors if there are any concerns, officials said.

The Joint Base San Antonio commander authorized non-mission-essential personnel to show up two hours late, up to 9 a.m., according to a release. Late reporting applies to those badigned to JBSA-Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis, JBSA-Lackland and JBSA Randolph.

Even though people were overjoyed to see the snow, posting photos of snow-covered lawns and children building snowmen on social media, the snow took its toll on power lines.

By about 10:45 p.m., CPS Energy reported 561 outages affecting 82,627 customers.

CPS spokesman Albert Cantu said many of the outages are a result of snow snapping tree limbs, taking out primary power lines. The most extensive outages are clustered around the North Side in areas that got the most snow.

“We do have crews that are working on it right now,” he said. “The road conditions are what’s slowing the process down.”

Crews were working throughout the night to restore services as soon as they could, he said. San Antonio firefighters were also responding to several calls for downed power lines.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood urged area residents to be mindful of what is placed around any heaters and not to use an oven to warm up the home. He also urged people to make sure their smoke detectors are in working order.

The snow was expected to leave the area by midnight, but a freeze warning remained in effect for Bexar County overnight. Residents are advised to bring their pets and plants inside and to take precautions to keep their water pipes from freezing, Platt said.

The time frame of most concern will be between 4 and 9 a.m. Friday, Platt said. That’s when some spots of black ice could develop on bridges and overpbades in the outlying areas of San Antonio — but those dangers likely won’t occur inside the city limits, he predicted.

Temperatures will likely hit a low of 33 or 34 degrees overnight in San Antonio, while they could fall as low as 31 or 32 degrees in outlying areas, Platt said.

But the winter conditions aren’t expected to last long — the forecast calls for a high of 55 degrees for San Antonio and then highs in the mid-60s through the weekend.
