SLO County Opens COVID-19 Vaccines to Seniors 65+

The San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Health is now opening appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine for people 65 and older.

County health officials say the decision comes on the recommendation of the local Vaccine Task Force based on the current supply of vaccines and the risk of serious COVID-19 outcomes.

Appointments for next week will open at 9 am on Thursday, February 11. To schedule an appointment, visit or call the County Call Center at (805) 543-2444.

Getting the COVID-19 vaccine is something San Luis Obispo County resident George Westlund says he was looking forward to.

“I just see it as another line of protection in addition to the masks,” Westlund said.

While people in Westlund’s age group, people 65 to 74, can now get the vaccine, the announcement came with some caveats.

“We have 1,900 citations and a population of 38,000 that make up that 65-74 age group in our county. As you can see, we have a woefully inadequate supply to meet the demand,” said Dr. Penny Borenstein, St. Louis County. Bishop Public Health Officer said.

People in the community are asked to assess their health needs and risks of contracting the virus to see if they can continue to postpone the appointment for now.

For Westlund, he says it will be worth the wait when it’s his turn to get vaccinated, as his family and friends have been affected by the virus.

“I know people who have contracted it: some had mild cases, others had worse cases, and I know a couple of people whose family members have died from it. I have to,” Westlund said.

Health officials say appointments are limited due to the limited supply of vaccines.

The county expects to administer more than 6,100 first and second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at clinics next week in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande.

Vaccine appointments are also available at select pharmacies and at French Hospital Medical Center, as your own supplies allow. Click here for information on other local vaccine opportunities.
