Lenexa police are investigating a shooting at a Costco Wholesale store near 95th Street and Interstate 35.
Police alerted the public shortly before noon, saying that this was not an active shooting incident.
A large police presence was expected in the store for "several hours," police said. Law enforcement officers from nearby agencies also responded to the incident, according to officer Danny Chávez, a spokesman for the Lenexa police.
A buyer claimed to have heard four shots inside the store but could not see who was firing or if someone was injured.
Nikki Lotia de Olathe was in the store looking for some items when she heard people shouting that there was a shooting.
"I did not know what happened," he said. "I heard people say:" Run to the back, run to the back, there's a shootout. "
Lotia said he hid in the store pharmacy and barricaded himself behind some chairs. "I kept praying and praying," he said.
He called 911 and sent a text message to his son.
Finally, two police officers found her and escorted her from the store.
As the investigation into the shooting continued, Kansas Highway Patrol patrol cars stopped customers leaving the parking lot.
