Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) came to the floor of the Senate to beat his colleague Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) for waxing "crocodile tears" during the closure.
"These crocodile tears that the Texas senator is crying for the first responders are very difficult to take," Bennet said Thursday. "For me they are too difficult to take, because when the Texas senator closed this government in 2013, my state was flooded.
"The people were killed," the senator said. "The houses of the people were destroyed, their small businesses were ruined, forever."
"Because of the Texas senator, this government was shut down for political reasons," he said of the end of 2013. "Then he managed to reach second place in the Iowa caucuses, [which] they did not help the first responders, the teachers, the students whose schools closed with a federal government that was closed due to the junior senator from Texas.
