The trump factor
President Trump supported Senate Republican candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith before the election that held two rallies on Monday, one in Tupelo, Mississippi, and then one 300 miles south in Biloxi, Mississippi.
In Tupelo, Mr. Trump chose Espy as "on the left".
"The opponent of Cindy's left" called Espy. "It's too far to the left, Oh, it's out there, how does it fit in with Mississippi, I mean, how does it fit?"
Espy answered Mr. Trump's questions about how he fits into Mississippi politics after voting on Tuesday.
"I was the first black congressman [in Mississippi] since the Civil War, "Espy said." Mike Espy was the secretary of agriculture, the first Mississippi to hold that position, the first black man in the nation to fill that position. "Espy also said he inherited the legacy of his grandfather, who founded a hospital in the state.
Last week, Trump called Hyde-Smith "a spectacular woman" and a "great senator". He also defended her for the comment of "hanging in public", saying: "She made a statement in which I know she feels very bad about that, and it was something of a joke, as she said, and she is a tremendous woman" . And it's a pity that she has to go through this. "
