HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) has deployed six self-service Chronic Waste Disease (CWD) sampling stations in northern Alabama.

WFF is providing this effort in northern Alabama after deer in nearby Mississippi and Tennessee counties tested positive for CWD.

The stations in Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Franklin, Lauderdale and Colbert counties can receive deer heads samples 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

To use the self-service station, there are only a few steps:

  1. Remove the head of the deer leaving 4-6 inches of neck attached.
  2. Place the head in the provided plastic bag and tie it closed. To get money, the antlers can be removed at the base of each pole or by removing the skull plate before bagging the head.
  3. Complete all sections of the biological sample label and attach it to the bag with a zipper.
  4. Remove and retain the lower part of the receipt of the biological sample label before placing the packed head in the freezer.

All plastic bags, labels and flanges for samples are provided in the freezer locations.

The results of the tests will be sent by email to the hunter within three to four weeks.

If you are leaving the samples in the WFF office, hunters are asked to call in advance for a biologist to be available to take the sample.
