The Salvation Army Elgin Corps needs bellmen during their fundraising campaign for the holidays and is looking for people to offer gifts for young children through their Angel Tree program.
Xavier Montenegro of the Salvation Army said that Elgin Corps went down from 10 to 15 bell-ringers for the 2016 holiday season, when it had 60 people at 50 sites in the Elgin area. Some of the ringers are paid $ 8.75 per hour, but most are volunteers, he said.
"Elgin has dropped approximately 50 percent in donations at the same time last year, and we have only been able to help him – half of our sites," Montenegro said. He said that last year's campaign raised around $ 230,000.
Montenegro said that all the Corps sites in Chicago are falling in donations for this season's Red Kettle campaign, which started later than in 201
With an improved economy, "It has been harder to find people who work in paid shifts, "he said. His wife, Heather Montenegro, said the fall could also be because more people buy online or carry less cash when they visit stores.
Heather Montenegro said that shifts are usually 2 hours and that families have served as a group.
The Montenegros said they have been working in Elgin for about six months, coming to the city from a six-year assignment working and teaching at the Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Chicago.
"Elgin has been excellent." The community and the people have been very open with us, "said Xavier Montenegro.
Heather Montenegro said that the local community has already approached to provide gifts to some 750 children who have Provided wish lists through the Angel Tree program of the Elgin Corps, however, Elgin Corps is looking for people who can provide the items that are on the lists of another 150 children aged 12 and under. the Angel Tree program, volunteers can "adopt" angels, which include items from the children's wish list that will be served through the Body Toy Christmas Store.
The Montenegros also oversee an Adopt-A program -Family where the Salvation Army selects a specific family to be adopted, and a tree of virtual angels online, for companies or families wishing to host the placement of a n Angel Tree tree but they do not have a location for a physical tree.
