The New Orleans Saints needed to honor Navy veteran John Wells at this weekend’s recreation by giving him an award for his life accomplishments. Wells, who’s the manager director of the Military Veterans Advocacy group, declined the award.
Wells introduced his refusal of the award in a letter, wherein he upbraided the Saints and the NFL for permitting gamers to kneel through the nationwide anthem. From the New Orleans Advocate:
“Although I am touched and honored to be selected for such an award, the ongoing controversy with NFL players’ disrespect for the national flag forces me to decline to participate in the presentation,” wrote Wells, in keeping with the discharge. “I am unable, in good conscience, to enter an NFL stadium while this discourtesy prevails. Since this award is tainted with the dishonorable actions of the NFL and its players, I cannot accept it.”
Wells went on to name the protests a “slap in the face” to all veterans and say that he “had hoped and prayed that the NFL would outlaw these disgraceful protests.”
As at all times, it’s good to pause right here and keep in mind that the NFL participant protests have by no means had a single factor to do with the army.
The Saints responded to Wells in an announcement launched final evening. It reads partly:
Throughout Mr. Wells’ media appearances right this moment, he has acknowledged he now not helps NFL soccer. That is unlucky and disappointing contemplating the New Orleans Saints’ unwavering 50-plus yr dedication to honor, help and acknowledge our servicemen and ladies and veterans. We is not going to permit Mr. Wells’ resolution and subsequent media appearances to distract our gamers and group from persevering with to honor and help our army and veterans. We, as a corporation, have determined to maneuver on from this unhappy and divisive discourse and focus our consideration on supporting our army and veterans. In lieu of honoring Mr. Wells, we are going to use the time allotted for the Peoples Health Champion Award to spotlight non-political army advocacy applications and encourage our followers and group to hitch us in contributing to those teams who instantly help our army and veterans.
I look ahead to Wells’s upcoming look on Sean Hannity’s present.[New Orleans Advocate]
