Researchers within the U.Okay. and China have discovered that one in every of its metals, iridium, can kill most cancers cells.

According to a launch from the University Of Warwick, it does so, “by filling them with deadly version of oxygen.”

The researchers developed an activated organic-iridium compound and used a laser to ship it by means of the pores and skin and all layers of a mannequin lung most cancers cell tumor.

After figuring out it had killed the dangerous cells, the crew moved on to testing the remedy’s influence on non-cancerous cells and located it did no injury to wholesome tissue.

“This project is a leap forward in understanding how these new iridium-based anti-cancer compounds are attacking cancer cells, introducing different mechanisms of action, to get around the resistance issue and tackle cancer from a different angle,” Cookson Chiu, one of many research’s authors, commented.
