Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota has accepted that he won’t find a team willing to pay him money as a starter this season.
And then Mariota plans to sign a new contract with the Raiders, reports Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The new contract will have a steep pay cut: Under his old contract, Mariota was scheduled to make $ 10.725 million this season, but now he will make just $ 3.5 million. However, you can earn up to $ 8 million if you take advantage of all your incentives.
Those incentives probably won’t be possible unless starting quarterback Derek Carr is injured or benched.
Last year, Mariota appeared in only one game, coming off the bench for an injured Carr and playing reasonably well in that one. But he didn’t play well enough that neither team wanted to change his old contract, so he will be left with a reduced contract for a second year in Las Vegas.
