Report: A offered $ 14 million additional Kyler Murray to stay in baseball

Last fall, it seemed like an inevitable conclusion that Kyler Murray would end up playing professional baseball.

The Oakland Athletics selected the Oklahoma outfielder with the ninth pick of the 2018 draft and signed him into an agreement worth nearly $ 5 million.

A stipulation of the contract allowed him to play one more year of football for the Sooners, something that Murray made clear was a priority for him.

"We totally agreed with his desire to play field marshal in Oklahoma," scout director Eric A Kubota told reporters last June. "Frankly, we're a little excited to be Oklahoma fans in 12 games."

A's bet on Murray did not pay off.

Going forward to January, Murray had won the Heisman Trophy, and the Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback, Baker Mayfield, had helped keep breaking the stigma against undersized quarterbacks in the NFL.

Standing with 5-10 and around 200 pounds, Murray has the kind of body that would have left him ignored by the NFL scouts many years ago. Now he is confident that the first-round pick can come first on the board in the NFL draft next week.

It all added up to a draw that was too strong for Murray, who gave up on the millions of guarantees the A's had committed to him for the opportunity to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL.

According to a Sports Illustrated report, Murray left a lot more money on the table than originally thought.

The supposedly improved offer from A to Murray at $ 14 million

Robert Klemko of SI reports that the As increased their commitment to Murray in January with an offer of $ 14 million in guaranteed money in addition to their original signature bonus.

Of the report:

"According to a source close to the family, the A contingent that visited Kyler in January offered him a contract worth $ 14 million in guaranteed cash, in addition to his signature bonus. (The agreement would have required Oakland to take the The extreme step of adding Murray to his list of 40 men and would have paid a similar number to that of an NFL top-10 selection. "For the context, Bears linebacker Roquan Smith, who was eighth in 2018, signed an four-year contract worth $ 18.5 million.) But Kyler rejected that offer, and his family has kept those finances out of the media. "

The informed offer was added to the first-round money of the NFL

Basically, the A's offered Murray the first-round money from the NFL to keep baseball. It was a significant commitment to a baseball prospect who, like most young prospects, was far from becoming a major league contributor.

But with Murray firing on the NFL draft boards, he had a significant influence on the A's, who reportedly were happy to share the first-round money from the NFL to an unproven prospect.

Still not enough

Of course, Murray rejected them and will enter next week as the biggest story in the NFL draft. Murray allegedly rejected the offer of the A reinforces the idea that football is his first love, something that should have been clear when last fall he decided to play the game for free, instead of starting his professional baseball career.

The A clearly coveted Murray and risked and lost when they decided to recruit him and allowed him to play football. Apparently, they valued it so much that they opposed the rules of baseball deals with the mbadive offer of trying to keep it on board.

Ultimately, the lure of the NFL was too strong for Murray. He will realize those dreams next Thursday when his name appears in the first round of the draft.
