Reese Witherspoon is not quite ready to be an empty nester.
The Oscar-winning actress revealed in Monday's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that she screamed when her eldest son left for college.
"It's weird when your kids go to college, it's hard," Witherspoon said when talking about his daughter Ava, 19, who is finishing her first year. "… I could have walked into her empty room, lying on her bed and crying when she went to college."
The "Legally Blonde" star and her ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, are Ava's parents and their 15-year-old son Deacon. Witherspoon and her current husband, Jim Toth, have a son, Tennessee, 6.
While Witherspoon, 43, may have been in the dumps after Ava went to school, she can be sure the children will return from college, including Ava. "She's coming back," she said. "Apparently, mothers who have had children who have gone to college, come back, right? I thought it would have gone, but it's coming back."
However, the actress, who will return to the small screen next month on the second season of HBO's "Big Little Lies," was not one of those students who returned. She went to college for a year before leaving the studio because she started getting roles in movies, a career change that her mother did not accept.
"My mother was so angry with me that I dropped out of college because I wanted her to be a doctor, specifically a plastic surgeon," she told DeGeneres.
Witherspoon said that his mother finally passed from her disappointment, thanks in large part to her own selfless deed.
"My mother was really determined that I was a plastic surgeon," she said. "And she was angry about that probably for about 10 years, and then I bought her a house and she got over it."
