ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – The Tampa Bay Rays plan to give veteran reliever Sergio Romo the first start of his career Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels, although it will be a short one.

Romo, who has appeared in 588 major league games over the course of 11 seasons, will open the game before Rays manager Kevin Cash turns to rookie southpaw Ryan Yarbrough.

The plan is to let Romo face the heart of the Angels' lineup. batters with power before bringing Yarbrough, who has a 3-2 record and 3.93 ERA. The goal is to prevent players like Mike Trout and Albert Pujols from seeing Yarbrough later in the game.

"Obviously they could change that now because they know we're throwing Romo, but I doubt it, there are a couple of guys in that lineup that are not going to move no matter who throws," Cash said before Friday's game. "Go through one or two innings, see where we are, and then probably pbad the ball to Yarbs, I think it helps, it benefits him."

The Rays have relied on their relievers to effectively take them through several games this season due to injuries, but this would take the concept of a "bullpen game" to the next level. However, Cash does not think it's as farfetched as it might seem at first glance.

"We have kicked this idea for quite some time," Cash said. "The National League, it becomes much easier because you are badessing that point of batter, which we do, and prevents your traditional starter having to get to the plate more than three times."

Even so, Cash admitted the interest in baseball by the announcement that Romo would begin to catch him by surprise.

"We are the Rays, then no no (I expected it)," Cash said.
