Quinn Cook says that LeBron called Rob Pelinka on his behalf during free agency

In 2015, Quinn Cook had his first chance to break an NBA roster with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Unfortunately, Cook was spared only six games in the preseason, but he did form a relationship with LeBron James that would pay dividends for him in the future.

Earlier this month, Cook was rejected by the Golden State Warriors, the team that gave him his first full-time job in the NBA, and the team with which he won a championship just last year. After two promising seasons in Oakland, Cook was able to capitalize on a meaningful contract for the first time in his young career. He also had the luxury of deciding where he wanted to play after going through 10-day contracts and partially guaranteed in previous seasons.

Apparently, Cook was eyeing Los Angeles, and his former teammate, James, did everything he could to make sure Cook fulfilled his wish. During a conference call Thursday, Cook made it clear that he and James both wanted to meet with the Lakers.

"(LeBron is here) played an important role because I know that LeBron makes everyone better, he brings the best of all, and I saw him in my time with him in Cleveland for a while." He made me a better player in two months. "said Cook.

"To have a full season with him, I can only imagine what kind of player I can be. That was definitely a great thing. Obviously we have a great relationship. He called rob [Pelinka] In my name, "Cook continued," I am happy that he believes in me and that he wants me to be part of this team. That meant a lot. "

That may seem like a very kind gesture to someone with whom James only spent a few weeks in the preseason, but according to Mark Medina of The Mercury News, James and Cook have kept in touch over the years. Cook also has a relationship with Davis:

Cook already had close relationships with James and Anthony Davis. Cook called Davis "a brother" after Cook played against each other in McDonald's 2011 All-American game and had a short season together in New Orleans (2016-17). Cook called James "my vet" for two reasons. James, who is close to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, often attended the Blue Devils games during his four years (2011-2015). Cook played on the campus of the Cleveland Cavaliers training camp in 2015. During Cook's various stops in New Orleans (2016-17), Dallas (2016-7) and Golden State (2017-19), James stayed on Contact.

"At any point in my career, he would make sure I was good, talking to and advising me," Cook said of James. "Having a guy like that in your corner who I can contact at any time and gives me advice, helps me at every stage of my career. It's something I've never taken for granted. I look forward to meeting him again. "

Cook will fight for minutes in the position of point guard with Rajon Rondo, who signed with the Lakers last season, and Alex Caruso, who has been with the team for two seasons, but with the backing of James and Davis, should be able to develop a role significant in the rotation of head coach Frank Vogel. It certainly does not hurt that it's a 41.8 percent race shooting from behind the 3-point line, either.
