PSA: Does your iPhone suddenly crash? Here’s why (and how to fix it)

Developing story …

Is your iOS device restarting seemingly random this morning? You're not alone.

Apple is having a pretty tough week when it comes to nasty software bugs. First, there was that crazy administrator logon bridge in macOS: now a bug is causing iOS devices around the world to crash.

This is what is happening (at least so far): an error in the notifications system crashing trampoline, the part of iOS that handles the home screen. This causes what looks a lot like a device reboot, after which you will be asked to re-enter your PIN.

Applications with preprogrammed daily notifications (training applications, medication reminder applications, etc.) in particular, seem to trigger the blockage … but only after the system clock goes to the 12:15 a.m. of December 2, 2017. That originates in applications with daily notifications means that it does not affect all – but it also makes it quite difficult to restrict the list of affected applications.

There is still no official solution, but it seems that is a solution: if you can make your device boot for a few minutes without blocking and you can remember which applications send daily notifications, disable notifications of those applications (Settings> Notifications> the application in question> toggle "Allow notifications")

(As a last resort), you can manually access and deactivate notifications for each and every application and work backwards to turn them back on. .. but that is a great pain.)

What probably should not do, although some recommend it, is to set the system clock back to a time before December 2. Many things in modern devices touch the system clock as part of their encryption / certification / etc algorithms, so things (like, for example, iMessage) start to break when the clock in your system is turned off. It will not block your device, but many things will have fun.

If your iOS device does not crash after December 2 at 12:15 a.m. local time, meanwhile, you probably do not need to do anything. You probably do not use any applications with local / scheduled notifications, or you already have them turned off.

One could follow the error reports as it spread around the world, beginning in Australia. Supposedly, it will begin to reach the phones of the west coast of the USA. UU Shortly after this publication is published.

We have communicated with Apple to discuss it.
