Sony's PS4 sales total is increasing by 10 million every five months, while game sales now amount to more than 617 million.

The gold standard for Sony in terms of console sales is still the PlayStation 2. In the course of its life, the PS2 sold more than 150 million units worldwide and was awarded the crown of "the fastest console to sell 100 million" in 2005. However, the PS4 could supplant the PS2 in the history books.

Sony has just announced that sales of PS4 consoles exceeded 70 million units until December 3. The last time we reported on the total in June when sales last 60 million. Therefore, the PS4 is sold at a rate of 10 million consoles every five months, and those sales are divided between the PS4 Slim and the PS4 Pro . The PS2 took five years and nine months to reach 100 million. We just celebrated the fourth birthday of the PS4, giving the Sony console 21 months to reach 100 million and beat the PS2. Before that, it will pbad the 80 million sales of the PS3.

Software sales are also impressive. When PS4 reached 60 million, it was accompanied by 487.8 million games sales. Now we are at 70 million and game sales have increased to 617.8 million. That's an average of 26 million games sold each month.

PlayStation VR also plays an important role in ongoing sales. Two million PS VR kits are now in the hands of consumers who also bought 12.2 million copies of the 150 CV virtual reality games available. They are still relatively small numbers, but the market for virtual reality on the consoles is clearly there.

These sales figures are very positive for Sony, especially when considering the success of the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft launching the Xbox One X to grab the crown of the most powerful gaming console. In fact, the switch seems to be the biggest threat to Sony in the future, but I doubt it will stop the PS4 reaching 100 million next year.
