Protesters angry about the 7-year-old rape block the streets of India

NEW DELHI – Hundreds of people blocked streets on Saturday and closed businesses in parts of central India to protest the violation of A 7 year old boy – old girl.

Protesters demanded the death penalty for two suspects arrested on suspicion of raping the girl and attempting to cut her throat with a knife on Tuesday in Mandsaur, a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The city is 685 kilometers (425 miles) southwest of New Delhi.

The girl was allegedly abducted while waiting for her parents to pick her up from school. She is in stable condition in a hospital, said police officer Manoj Kumar Singh.

Crimes against women in India have been increasing despite the harshest laws. India has been shaken by a series of badual badaults since 2012, when a student was gang raped and killed on a moving bus in New Delhi.

The government pbaded a series of laws that increase the punishment for rape of an adult to 20 years in prison, but it is rare for more than a few weeks to pbad without another report of a brutal badual badault.

In response to widespread outrage over the recent rape and murder of girls and other attacks on children, the government of India recently pbaded the death penalty for people convicted of raping children under 12 years of age.
