Subaru adds a giant option to its lineup with the debut of the Subaru Ascent 2019, a large three-row SUV that, according to the automaker, is its largest vehicle. The new model debuted tonight on the eve of the 2017 LA Auto Show.

The promotion is based on an expanded version of Subie's new global platform that also underpins the new generations of Impreza and Crosstrek . It is available in configurations of seven or eight seats, depending on whether one opts for the Captain's chairs or the bench seats in the third row.

Fueling this family-size Subaru is a new 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a reasonable 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The symmetric all-wheel drive system of Subaru with X-Mode is standard along with a high-torque version of Lineartronic's continuously variable transmission.

Equipped correctly, the Ascent can tow up to a payload of 5,000 pounds. Not in the trailer? Well, there is still plenty of space for loading inside with folding and folding seats or to stow the top with the standard roof rails.

On the board, you'll find what appears to be the same StarLink infotainment system found in the Crosstrek with standard connectivity to Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and StarLink Apps. In addition, the Ascent will also feature a new WiFi 4G LTE-powered hotspot functionality.

Blind spot supervision and subsequent cross traffic alert will be optional features. However, the most interesting tidbit of the presentation (well, in addition to chatty dogs) is that Subaru is making its EyeSight driver badistance technology standard on the Ascent 2019. That means adaptive speed control, maintenance badistance rails, automatic pre-collision brakes and more are all included in the starting price.

For now, that starting price has been set at a vague "low 30 thousand" range, but we expect the number to be more specific as we approach the beginning of 2018, when the Ascension arrives to challenge the likes of Toyota Highlander Honda & # 39; s Pilot and the new three-row Volkswagen Atlas .
