LONDON (Reuters) – British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson warned that Brexit may collapse, but that "it will be fine at the end" and that US President Trump will take a tougher stance if he leads the talks, according to BuzzFeed.
] Johnson's comments were secretly taped at a dinner on Wednesday night and published on Thursday by the news website hours after the ministers found a compromise on a Brexit plan of support for the Irish border.
Johnson said that Prime Minister Theresa May was beginning to take a harder line, but that there would be a need for moderation as the talks became more difficult in the coming months.
"I think Theresa is going to enter a phase where we are much more combative with Brussels," Johnson said.
"You have to face the fact that now there can be a collapse, OKAY, I do not want anyone to panic during the crisis, without panic, public pro bono, without bloody panic, everything will be fine in the end" .
Johnson said that the US president, Trump, who is engaged in a battle over steel tariffs with European allies, including Britain, would take a stronger approach if he were in charge of the negotiations.
"Imagine Trump doing Brexit," Johnson said.
"He would go in with all the blood … There would be all kinds of crises, all kinds of chaos, everybody would think he had gone crazy, but you can actually get somewhere, it's a very, very good idea."
A spokeswoman for May's office in Downing Street did not offer an immediate comment when she contacted Reuters.
