Powerball and Mega Millions: winning tickets sold in New Hampshire and Florida

A Powerball ticket in New Hampshire is the $ 570 million jackpot winner, one of the largest in the history of the multi-state lottery.

The winning numbers, drawn Saturday night, were 12, 29, 30, 33, 61 and 26. The owner of the winning ticket can choose the annuity option in which the payments are made over 30 years, and each annual payment increases over time. Most, however, choose the cash option. In this case, the cash to take home would be $ 358.5 million.

More than 4 million tickets, including the grand prize winner, won prizes for Saturday's draw.

Last year, a woman from Chicopee, Massachusetts, won the $ 758 million Powerball and received a one-time payment of $ 480 million after choosing the cash option. In 2016, three winners from California, Florida and Tennessee divided a jackpot of almost $ 1.6 billion.

The game started as Lotto America in the late 1980s and was changed and renamed Powerball in the early 1990s. It is one of the two great jackpot games played in 44 states, the District of Columbia and the United States Virgin Islands UU

The other, Mega Millions, found a winner on Friday. A single holder of a Mega Millions ticket in Florida won the $ 450 million jackpot, the fourth largest in the 15-year history of the multi-state lottery. The winning ticket was sold at 7-Eleven in Port Richey, a town on the gulf coast northwest of Tampa, according to the Florida Lottery.

The winning Mega Millions numbers, drawn Friday night, were 28, 30, 39, 59, 70 and 10. Payments made over 29 years, with each annual payment 5 percent larger than the previous one, they will be made under the annuity option. The one-time cash payment would yield $ 281 million.

This victory comes only a few years after another Florida winner split a large number with a Maryland winner. The winners of the two states won the $ 414 million Mega Millions jackpot in 2014.

A total of nearly 3 million tickets, including the Mega Millions jackpot winner, won prizes on Friday.

The odds of winning prizes in both games were astronomical. For the Powerball jackpot, they were 1 in 292 million. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot were worse: 1 in 302.6 million, according to CNN Money.

The prizes for both lotteries have dropped to $ 40 million, with the draws scheduled for Mega Millions on Tuesday and Wednesday for Powerball. [19659002] All lottery winnings are subject to a 25 percent federal income tax withholding, wrote Jonnelle Marte of The Washington Post. Most states also charge taxes, some up to 9 percent.

States like New York, Maryland and the District of Columbia are among the worst places to win a lottery. Maryland, for example, retains 8.75 percent for residents and 7 percent for non-residents. But the winners in 10 states, as well as in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. They could go with greater profits because those states do not charge state taxes for lottery winnings, wrote Mars.
