Power Rankings: WGC-Workday Championship

Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, Joaquin Niemann, Hideki Matsuyama, and Jason Day will be among the notables featured on Tuesday’s Fantasy Insider.

Just as two of the three Asian Swing tournaments in the fall moved to sites in the United States due to the challenges caused by the pandemic, the WGC-Workday in Florida serves as a temporary replacement for what was an annual outing to Mexico City for the 2017-2020 WGC-Mexico Championship. The goal is to return to Mexico in 2022, but the focus at this time is to continue the tradition of this WGC regardless of the stage.

The WGC-Workday moment serves as an entry or a comeback for international talents to achieve four rounds in a 72-hole no-cut competition, all before THE PLAYERS Championship in two weeks, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in four. weeks, the Masters in six weeks, and so on.

The Concession’s timing as host is serendipitous in the context of sports in the Tampa Bay area. The Rays returned to the World Series in 2020 and the Buccaneers became the first team to win a Super Bowl at their home stadium. The local fans have been spoiled lately!

DeChambeau isn’t from Tampa, he’s a California native, but he’s undefeated on the host field this week. Four others on the field also competed in the 2015 NCAA Men’s Championship: Thomas Detry (T3), Jon Rahm (T22), Scottie Scheffler (T33) and Xander Schauffele (T45).

The Concession is the only collaboration between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. Appropriately, it is named after Nicklaus’ award of a short putt to English during the 1969 Ryder Cup that resulted in a draw (and the United States retained the trophy). It’s a par 72 stock with 7,474 yards of mind-blowing imagery.

Nestled entirely in the native Florida landscape, there are more than six dozen bunkers throughout the property. Typical of many Nicklaus designs, there is room to move it off the tee, but course management is just as important as approach accuracy.

TifEagle Bermuda greens average just 6,000 square feet, and that’s a generous application due to the undulations, segments, and a 12-foot Stimpmeter setup. Usually with unfamiliar greens that turn out to be challenging, ball hitters tend to hog the final leaderboard, but quick putter studies – and you don’t qualify for a WGC unless you’re that – will get mixed up.

The course should present itself beautifully on its debut. The weather forecast is excellent. A mostly sunny sky will allow daytime highs to reach 80 degrees at all times. Winds will be moderate by Florida standards. Even a push from the north on Thursday shouldn’t bother before slightly stronger breezes rotate to blow from the predominant southerly direction.

In addition to the 550 FedExCup points and the $ 1.82 million payday, the champion will earn a three-year PGA TOUR membership exemption. If a non-member wins and accepts membership, FedExCup points will not contribute to their total membership this season because they are a WGC.
