Pete Batigiag named Biden’s transportation secretary

Batagiag will be the first Senate-confirmed LGBTQ cabinet secretary to be nominated through the Chamber.

A candidate Biden’s choice, Walts spoke of a top job in the administration that came after the Democratic primary.

The role of the transport secretary is expected to play a central role in Biden’s push for a bipartisan infrastructure package.

Buttigieg is seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, but someone who lacked a clear path to a highly elected office, seeing the continued right turn of his home state of Indiana.

Batigiag emerged as the leading candidate for the role of Transport Secretary in recent times. The former mayor was believed to host other positions including the US Ambassador to the United Nations and the Secretary of Commerce.

Other Democrats were also considered for the position, including former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raymondo.

After concluding his presidential campaign earlier in the year, Batigiag supported Biden and spent most of the general election as the chief fundraiser and events for the former vice president.

Biden praised Battingig at a March show in Dallas, which he compared to his late son, Bue Biden.

“I know it may not mean much to most people, but to me it’s the highest compliment I can give to any man or woman,” said Joe Biden.

Batigiag served as mayor of South Bend since 2012, before running for president. He did not seek reunion in 2019.

During his tenure as mayor, Batagi deployed as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan in 2014.

Buttigig appeared as gay in a 2015 essay for the South Bend Tribune, serving as mayor. Later that same year, Batigiag won the reunion.

Prior to running for office, Battig was a consultant at McGinsey & Company in Chicago.
