WASHINGTON – A vote on President Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue package could occur by the end of next week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
Now that the impeachment of former President Donald Trump is over, Congress’s attention is focused on passing Biden’s “American Bailout Plan,” which includes another round of $ 1,400 checks for eligible Americans and a boost to federal unemployment. among other provisions.
Democrats have decided to push the package through Congress using a rare tactic known as “budget reconciliation” that will allow them to bypass any Republican dissent and pass the bailout with a simple majority of votes.
Individual committees have been working out the details of the package, including a possible $ 15 minimum wage increase, before it comes before the House.
“That then goes to the Rules Committee for us to vote on sometime at the end of next week, it’s my hope,” Pelosi told reporters at her weekly briefing on Thursday.
“I feel like we have worked with the staff 24/7 for several weeks to make sure we are on schedule for the American rescue plan, the Biden plan,” he said.
The huge package is Biden’s first legislative fight as president and has been the singular focus of his administration, which declined to comment publicly on Trump’s impeachment in the Senate.
Biden and his Cabinet members have urged lawmakers to “go big” in another round of coronavirus relief to help the nation’s staggering economy after a year of mandatory shutdowns.
But many Republicans, who presented their own $ 600 billion counterproposal, believe that such a large stimulus bill is not needed and would only add to the mounting national debt.
Biden has also faced dissent from several moderate members of the Democratic Party, including Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who has called for more targeted stimulus controls.
