The Chiefs won 26–10, but the play took place in the second quarter at a time when the game was still in doubt. Kansas City was ahead 6-3 at the time.
The ruling chiefs allowed their own 35 to punt within less than six to six minutes, instead of the Patriots taking deep possession at the Kansas City end of the field. The replays showed that Mahomes had lost the ball before going on the field.
“As he was being controlled, other players were approaching him,” Corrente said of Mahomes. “And so, with those other players having an impact on him, a quarterback is understandable, and when I feel the player’s safety is in danger, his further progress is halted.
“And in this instance it was like that. So instead of allowing him to be hit by the second and third player, we turned it down and considered further progress at that point.”
New England was unable to challenge the ruling that further progress of the Mahomes was halted.
“They made progress forward, and they were down,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “You can’t challenge it.”
Mahomes stated that he played a whistle during the play, which led him to believe that the play would be ruled by a sack, not a tarnish.
The Mahomes and major were not fast offensives until later in the game. The quarterback said the game may have to be postponed from Sunday to Monday after each team’s positive COVID-19 test goes into effect. Chiefs, like the Patriots, were barred from their facility on Saturday.
“You can still find ways and ways to watch the film [to] “But this is something we are not prepared for,” said Mahomes, “I was not good enough because we did not execute at a high level, not being able to find people.” Play football very well. But I felt that I could do whatever I could to stay consistent with the game.
“Hopefully if it presents itself again – which it hopes it doesn’t – I’ll be able to do better.”
