The highly publicized and promoted Overwatch League of Blizzard, a professional eSports league devoted to the game, had a very successful first week, it seems. Blizzard announced today that the first week of programming in the league attracted more than 10 million viewers.
The inaugural season of the Overwatch League began last week in Los Angeles with four days of games between the 12 teams. The 10 million figure for people who saw the first wave of competition covers all networks, including Twitch, along with Activision's own MLG service. It also covers international partners such as ZhanQi TV, NetEase CC and Panda TV in China.
Blizzard also pointed out that this number may be higher since people saw the competition together, on the same screen, as is usually the case with traditional sports. For Twitch and MLG alone, the Overwatch League transmissions reached a peak record of 437,000 concurrent users during the battle of the first day between Dallas Fuel and the Seoul dynasty.
Tickets to Blizzard & Los Angeles Arena, where the competition took place, sold out for the entire week, Blizzard said.
The first season of the Overwatch League runs until June; the playoffs begin in July. Week 2 is happening at this time and continues over the weekend. You can see the full Overwatch League schedule here on the event website.
By comparison, the Divisional NFC Divisional game on Sunday between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints picked up an incredible 34.5 million viewers. Of course, the NFL is an established league that has existed for decades, while the Overwatch League has just begun.
