Oregon man dies while climbing tree for photo on a cliff by the sea

Authorities said an Oregon man who climbed a tree on the edge of a cliff for a photo died when a tree limb broke and he fell into the ocean about 100 feet, authorities said.

Steven Gastelum, 43, of Seaside, was attempting to take a photo around 2pm on the Devils Cauldron Trail in Oswald West State Park, which is along the coast in the northwestern part of the state, a state statement said .

He was traveling on foot with another man while climbing the tree, which appears to be an obstacle warning visitors to stay away from the shore.

Oregon State Police public information officer Capt. Tim Fox said Gastelum was on the other side of the barrier when he collapsed.

Police said officers from the Coast Guard and Nehley Bay Fire Department found him in the water in a jet ski and brought him to shore, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Fox said wildfires are still burning in Oregon, but the area that has been inundated was not affected by the fire.
