Oregon confirms the departure of Willie Taggart, appoints interim coach of Mario Cristobal – CollegeFootballTalk

Florida State has not yet announced Willie Taggart as its new head coach, but Oregon has announced that it is no longer his. The Ducks acknowledged Taggart's impending departure in a press release on Tuesday and appointed Mario Cristobal as interim coach to the offensive coordinator .

Taggart was 7-5 in his only season in charge of the program.

"We thank Willie for his efforts in Oregon, and we wish him and his family the best in the future," AD Rob Mullens said in a statement.

Cristobal is expected to be a full-time candidate, and an appearance at the Las Vegas Bowl next Saturday against the No. 25 Boise State will offer a good hearing, assuming the search lasts that long.

"I am grateful to Mario Cristobal for his willingness to step up and lead our program through our next bowl game," said Mullens. "The University of Oregon is a high-caliber academic institution with one of the nation's premier college football programs, and we are confident that we will find another excellent coach to lead our tremendous group of student-athletes in the future." Oregon announced Willie Taggart was no longer his head coach, and minutes later Florida State has officially claimed it.

Taggart will take over Jimbo Fisher and find the gold mine after the first job opening of the State of Florida since 1976.

Taggart gets the job after a season of 7-7 5 in Oregon and an 18-7 race to close its four seasons in South Florida. A native of Bradenton, Florida, Taggart returns home to his home state and high school classifications in which he himself acted as a field marshal in the 1990s.

Wage terms were not disclosed in the announcement .

With job offers in Tennessee and Arkansas, the Memphis head coach Mike Norvell will not take any of them.

Or, in more likely terms, none of them took it.

Either way, Norvell announced on Tuesday that it has signed an extension to remain in Memphis. The new agreement will last until 2022 and will pay Norvell a sum of $ 13 million before the bonuses, with an average of $ 2.6 million per year, according to Memphis Commercial-Appeal . Norvell earned $ 1.86 million in 2017 according to the coaching database of USA Today the fourth highest salary registered in the AAC.

At only 36 years old, Norvell recorded an 18-7 record in two seasons in Memphis. He led the Tigers to a 10-2 record with a Western AAC Division championship this season before falling into double overtime against UCF on Saturday.

Twentieth-ranked Tigers will host Iowa State at the Liberty Bowl on December 30 (12:30 pm ET, ABC).

Even before Jimbo Fisher left as head coach of Florida State for the same job at Texas A & M, Willie Taggart was widely regarded as one of the goals as a replacement , if not the superior objective. As of Tuesday afternoon, it seems that FSU is very close to getting its man.

In fact, it could happen as soon as today, a day after the Oregon head coach met for the first time with FSU officials.

Taggart has extensive links to the state of Florida, since Bradenton was born and trained at the USF for four seasons before assuming the position of UO last year.

In his first season with the ducks, Taggart has them sitting at 7 -5 coming from a 4-8 2016 campaign. The improvement should not be a surprise, as he has been a specialist in changes wherever he has been. Taggart took a team from Western Kentucky that had won two games in his two seasons before one that, after a first win of two wins, won seven games in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. South Florida had only 3- 9 in 2012; then, once again, a first season with two wins and then four the second, the Bulls won eight games in 2015 and 11 in 2016.

The coaches record combined with the deep recruiting links with the Sunshine State, obviously , make Taggart a very attractive target for FSU. Oregon has already made at least one preemptive strike to prevent Taggart from bolting Eugene after just one year, although the appeal of returning home may be too strong.

It was long thought that Tee Martin would be at stake for the opening in Tennessee, especially when Phillip Fulmer his former coach, (reportedly) pulled a power of Shakespeare play to catch the job of athletic director in UT. However, there has been very little speculation to connect the offensive coordinator of USC with the opening.

Until now.

Martin was a two-time SEC champion who, as a field marshal, helped lead the Volunteers to the 1998 national championship. Starting his coaching career in the high school ranks for three years, he worked in jobs in New Mexico (quarterbacks, 2009) and Kentucky (wide receivers, 2010-11) in a position at USC in 2012 as receiver trainer. He was then promoted to pass play coordinator in 2014 and offensive coordinator in 2016.

Other work-related Vols include defensive coordinator of Georgia Mel Tucker – reportedly interviewed twice, the second arriving today and, by FootballScoop.com defensive coordinator of Auburn Kevin Steele and head coach of SMU Chad Morris .
