Authorities say one person has died after a shooting at a northern Indiana mall
MISHAWAKA, Ind. – One person died in a shooting at a northern Indiana mall and sent shopkeepers to safety, officials said.
St. Joseph County Coroner Michael McGann said Saturday evening that a person died of a bullet in the University Park Mall in Misakaka around 3 p.m. He did not release further details or identification of the person killed.
Police also did not release information on a possible shooting suspect.
The shooting prompted the evacuation of the mall in the city east of South Bend. Officers remained stationed around the mall for hours.
The video posted on social media showed people running out of the mall in the seconds after the shooting.
Renee Dominic, 44, told the South Bend Tribune that she was in a mall play area with her husband and two children when she opened fire.
“I heard a blast and saw people running,” he said. “I thought maybe it was a tornado.”
Dominic said a shoe store employee instructed people to move in, and he and his family joined about 35 others, who later fled to a room in the back of the store before leaving.
