Officers respond to report of ‘active shooter’ at Severville Walmart

KNOXVILLE, Tenne. (WVLT) – Sevierville police said two people have been detained after a reported gunfight at the Walmart on Parkway. Police said the call came as an “active shooter” on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a manager at a nearby Chick-fil-A store, dozens of people were evacuated from Walmart just after 3:30 pm on Wednesday.

Cody Cummings told WVLT news anchor Amanda Hara between 20 and 30 Walmart customers that she was safely taking refuge inside the Chick-fil-A-store that she manages. The restaurant is next to Walmart. Cummings said refugees securing a civilian within their store reported a fight between two men that resulted in one of the men taking out a gun. The people around became fearful which caused panic.

Cummings said one of his employees was inside a Walmart when customers were alerted to the loudspeaker that a man with a gun was moving through the store.

Cummings reported that a SWAT team had been set up in the area, apparently searching for a possible gunner.

WVLT attempted to reach the Walmart store but no one answered the phone lines. A WVLT news crew was headed.

Tanger outlets in Sevierville were put on lockdown on Wednesday afternoon, but officials said they believed there was a danger on the shopping center’s premises.

Authorities did not immediately release any information about whether anyone was hurt.
