Former President Obama praised Major League Baseball (MLB) after it withdrew its Georgia All-Star Game in protest of the state’s new voting restrictions.
“Congratulations to @MLB for taking a stand on behalf of voting rights for all citizens. There is no better way for America’s pastime to honor the great Hank Aaron, who always set the example, ”Obama tweeted on Saturday.

The praise comes after MLB announced it would withdraw its July 13 game from Atlanta in opposition to a series of restrictions on voters. Brian kempBrian Kemp Trump calls for boycott of MLB for moving the Republican All-Star Game House calls MLB ‘absolutely pathetic’ for moving the All-Star Game Warnock: MLB decision ‘unfortunate’ consequence of Georgia law MORE (R) became law last month.
Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, said in a statement that the decision was made after discussions with teams and players and that moving the game out of Peach State is “the best way to demonstrate our values as a sport.” The MLB draft will also move out of Georgia.
“Major League Baseball fundamentally supports voting rights for all Americans and opposes restrictions on the polls,” Manfred said.
Among the restrictions Kemp signed into law are limits on ballot drop boxes, shorter periods in which a Georgia resident can request a ballot by mail, and new photo identification requirements for absentee voting.
The new measures have been criticized by Democrats and a number of private companies, who liken them to voter suppression.
Georgia Democrats said they were disappointed their state did not host the All-Star Game, but said they understood the stance MLB was taking.
Disappointed @MLB will move the All-Star Game, but proud of their stance on voting rights. GA GOP traded economic opportunity for repression, ”tweeted voting rights advocate and 2018 Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

Republicans have considered the measures necessary to ensure the security of the elections, although no evidence of widespread fraud has emerged in the state and the November elections were certified on three separate occasions.
The Republican Party criticized the MLB decision, saying it gave in to pressure from Democrats.
Georgians, and all Americans, must fully understand what MLB’s knee-jerk decision means: to cancel the culture and wake up the political activists who come for all aspects of their lives, including sports. If the left disagrees with you, the facts and the truth don’t matter, ”Kemp said in a statement Friday.
