A North Carolina mother pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter after her 3-year-old son died frozen in front of her house while she was drugged, but she should soon be free.

Jamie Basinger, 24, was sentenced to 245 days in prison, which she has already served since her arrest in April. The judge also sentenced her to three years of probation, which will be the only amount of time Basinger must meet in the future. She could be sentenced to another 19 months in prison if she violates that parole.

"I love my child to death, and I would never do anything to hurt him," said Basinger, who had been charged with involuntary manslaughter and infidelity. abuse.

Basinger struggled to mourn Monday as prosecutors described how the boy was found outside his home in freezing temperatures on March 15 while his mother slept indoors, WSOCTV reported.

Basinger admitted to using methamphetamine and smoking marijuana two days before his son's death. Investigators found handprints on the door, indicating that he tried to enter the house while he was frozen outside.

Basinger's attorney told the judge that the mother "never really stopped crying" since her son died and Basinger took full responsibility for the death.

"She was a good mother, she was a good mother," said her mother, Brenda Basinger. "I did not want any of this to happen, and I loved their babies."
