Since the 49ers moved up to the third overall pick in the draft, a consensus has emerged that they plan to draft Alabama quarterback Mac Jones. But they haven’t shaken hands with Alabama coach Nick Saban.
Saban said in the Dan Patrick show today the 49ers attended the Alabama Pro Day but did not show much interest in Jones.
“[Kyle Shanahan] he didn’t ask me anything. I stood next to him. I said hi. John Lynch too. They didn’t ask me anything. Maybe they thought they weren’t allowed to do it, ”Saban said, via Andrew Perloff.
Saban has previously expressed surprise that teams don’t talk to him more before selecting Alabama players, saying that aside from Bill Belichick, he rarely hears an NFL coach or general manager who wants to know more about the players he does. Saban has trained. So the 49ers not talking to Saban about Jones isn’t necessarily unusual, as they continue to keep their cards close to the vest.
