2019 Lexus UX Crossover debuts in Geneva

Following the recent launches of its impressive new LC flagship coupe, LS flagship sedan and three-row luxury RX utility vehicle, Lexus is opening a new front door to the brand with the UX, its first luxury compact crossover. Making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2018, the UX presents a bold new design, new efficient drive chains and innovative luxury features.

"The first Lexus UX is designed for the modern urban explorer who is looking for a new, contemporary and dynamic vision of luxury driving," said Chika Kako, executive vice president of Lexus International and chief engineer of the UX. "We designed the UX to attract buyers between 30 and 30 years old who are looking not only for the new and exciting, but also what is relevant to their lifestyles."

UX is the first Lexus to use the GA-C brand (Global Architecture – Compact) platform. The super-stiff structure and low center of gravity help the UX deliver exemplary driving agility and driving comfort, along with a distinctive driving personality.

The Lexus UX 2019 will be available in two versions: the UX 200 features a new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine along with a new Direct-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), while the UX 250h combines the same 2.0-liter gasoline engine with a new fourth generation hybrid traction system. The new technology that connects with the navigation allows the UX 250h to proactively optimize hybrid operation by learning and adapting to the routes and driving habits of the driver.


Facilitates urban exploration, the proportions of the vehicle allow easy maneuverability, with a better turning circle of 34 feet. A 103.9-inch wheelbase contributes to a smooth and stable ride and cab space, while the 177-inch length allows the Lexus UX to easily slide into comfortable "compact" parking spaces.

The basic shape of the vehicle flows from the Lexus shaft grille lines to wrap the cab. The sculpted exterior surfaces, including the flares of the front and rear fenders, transmit strength and safety. The UX axis grid uses a new block-shaped mesh pattern with individual elements that gradually change shape as they radiate from the central Lexus emblem. Daytime running lights arranged on an arrowhead motif above the headlights emphasize Lexus' signature L-shaped lighting and highlight the bold front design.

In the rear, an elegant and simple design contrasts sharply with the flared fenders to emphasize the UX dynamic and strong crossing qualities. A new distinctive feature of Lexus, the full-width rear lights project a distinctive night signature consisting of a sequence of 120 LEDs and narrows towards the center, measuring only 3 mm thick at its narrowest point.

Between the new aluminum of 17 and 18 inches Wheel designs created expressly for the UX, the 17-inch wheels and five spokes have a first-class aerodynamic design. The computer simulations and the wind tunnel tests produced a profile shape for the spokes of the wheel that increases the air flow to cool the disc brakes, without compromising the drag coefficient (Cd) of the vehicle.


The interior appearance of UX is pure Lexus. Since its inception, Lexus has used centuries-old Japanese traditions in craftsmanship and hospitality to infuse its vehicles with a unique sense of contemporary luxury and the user experience is no exception.

Inspired by a traditional Japanese concept that blurs the boundary between the exterior and the interior of the house, the designers created a sense of seamless continuity for the UX. From the driver's seat, the upper section of the instrument panel seems to extend beyond the windshield, providing the driver with an excellent field of vision and a clear perception of the dimensions of the vehicle. Seen from outside the vehicle, the bonnet seems to connect directly to the instrument panel through the windshield.

The entry and exit of the UX is facilitated by the optimal placement of the hip point and the unique configuration of the seat cushion. The human-centered approach continues behind the wheel. The low and unobtrusive design of the instrument panel and the thin A-pillar moldings are designed to improve visibility. The UX gives the driver an impressive view of the expected route from a crossroads, but with a driving position that feels more like that in a sport hatch.

A "seat in control" concept focuses the operation of all key vehicle functions around the driver's side of the cab, and the shape of the backrest allows the driver to operate the controls while maintaining a comfortable and natural posture. There is a lot of technology in the Lexus UX, and once again, the human-centered design approach makes everything easily accessible. An example is the integration of audio switches in a palm rest in the center console.

Even with such a strong focus on the driver, the UX cab creates a relaxing atmosphere for passengers. Chika Kako, Chief Engineer of the UX, took advantage of her experience in the development of materials and the time spent working in Europe to help define the appearance and quality of the interior, in particular, applying an orderly approach of "less is more".

Luxurious new finishes

The UX premieres two striking interior finishes that also connect with Japanese tradition. One element is an optional leather upholstery inspired by sashiko, a Japanese custom quilting technique that is also used in the manufacture of judo and kendo martial arts uniforms. A drilling pattern derived from curves and mathematical gradations in perfect alignment gives the seats a particularly contemporary appearance.

The sweeping instrument panel and the edge of the UX cab offer a choice of two different grain patterns and four colors. First in a Lexus, the UX offers a new trimmed finish inspired by the Japanese paper grain, known as washi, familiar in traditional Japanese homes. Created with a process of molding and a carefully chosen surface finish, evokes a feeling of calm and warmth. Also available is a grain leather finish, shared with the Lexus LC coupe and LS sedan.


Audacity does not end with the exterior of the UX. Lexus designers created a cabin atmosphere with a depth of quality that will be especially evident to those who buy a premium brand vehicle for the first time.

As an example, each of the UX air outlets uses a new one-button control control for airflow direction and volume while the vents are illuminated using a new wireless system. By combining the two functions in a single control, the vents could be made larger, improving their effectiveness. The LED light source of each control is fed wirelessly using electromagnetic resonance between two coils that vibrate at the same frequency. Using the same design principle as the Lexus LC rear combination lamps, the ventilation LEDs use the mirror optics to create the effect of the floating illumination depth, although the reflector element is only 3 mm thick.

A conventional CVT uses two pulleys, connected by a belt, which can change its radius without problems, and thus change the effective gear ratio, without any "step" effect. Lexus introduced the world's first luxury hybrid vehicle 15 years ago, and the brand remains the luxury hybrid leader. The 2019 UX 250h underlines that position with a new generation powertrain offering attractive performance and exemplary fuel efficiency.

The new gasoline engine stands out for its high thermal efficiency, and the new hybrid system has a projected production of 176 system power The optimization of the assistance level of the electric motor and the engine rpm produces a feeling of linear acceleration without the engine running at high speed. The speed of the engine is synchronized with the speed of the vehicle to create a feeling of immediate and continuous acceleration.

The hybrid system has a new compact and lightweight transaxle and power control unit, designed to minimize power losses due to heat and friction. The power distribution between the front and rear axles is automatically optimized when accelerating, cornering or driving on slippery surfaces. The UX 250h features Predictive Efficient Drive, a Lexus-first system that analyzes driving habits and the expected road and traffic conditions to optimize the charging and discharging of the hybrid battery. Predictive deceleration support technology uses accumulated knowledge about a driver's behavior to predict when and where the vehicle is likely to slow down or stop. For example, when the UX approaches a location where the driver slowed or stopped in the past and the driver releases the accelerator pedal, the Predictive Deceleration Bracket increases regenerative braking, allowing more efficient energy recovery and recharging of the hybrid battery. The system can provide deceleration support up to approximately 1,000 feet in front of the vehicle.

The predictive control of the state of charge (SOC) for the hybrid battery is a first level technology that works on both downhill and congested roads. Operating when the UX follows the instructions of the navigation system, it will predict the route by a distance of up to approximately six miles (10 km).


The UX, the new portal to the brand, will offer the Lexus + Security System. It includes a pre-collision system (PCS) that can recognize pedestrians at night. Large fog light frames with L-shaped chrome moldings and details that repeat the F-mesh grid pattern amplify the visual impact. An exclusive design of the rear bumper, 18-inch alloy wheels and jet black molding on the front and rear moldings complete the exterior transformation F SPORT.

The exclusive interior features of F SPORT include front sport seats made with a highly supportive integrated foam technique. An instrument gauge with a mobile outer ring is a F SPORT signature feature inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar. The package for the UX also adds a F SPORT steering wheel with a dimpled leather cover (also on the shift knob), eight-inch color TFT display, plus aluminum pedals and sport footrests.

The UX F SPORT driving experience can be further enhanced with Active Sound Control (ASC), which generates the hearing effect of up and down changes like those of a geared automatic transmission. And the additional sonic interaction design (SID) function adjusts the vehicle sound when driving in Sport S + mode (S + sound).


The UX 200 and the UX 250h will begin production this fall and go on sale in the United States in December. Prices will be announced closer to the sale date.
