In the absence of new films and television series of great appeal (not Oscar contenders this month I’m afraid), Netflix seems to be looking to the podcast market to figure out how to keep its huge subscriber base happy. Their new offerings in March include a host of documentary series and specials that you would totally listen to, if they were podcasts. I’ll look? Good, I do not. (I haven’t even seen Ted lasso yet.) But you could.

Operation: Varsity Blues (March 17) is sure to turn heads, fascinated as we were by the college admissions scandal that toppled cultural titans like Felicity Huffman, Aunt Becky from Full house, and the fashion mogul who once designed a paper towel holder I bought at Target. Everyone is still angry at the way they had already manipulated a system that was already working in their favor to get their children into “good” universities and with a good cause. The documentary feature film comes from some members of the same team that produced the first pandemic feeling King Tiger.

Murder among Mormons (March 3) is the kind of slightly exploitative true crime story that seems like it was already a podcast you subscribed to last year but forgot to listen to. It delves into a series of bombings that terrorized Salt Lake City in the mid-1980s.

And an inspiring story of perseverance in the Hoop dreams mold, Last Chance U: Basketball (March 10) is a spinoff of the long-running Netflix series. Last chance U. Change soccer’s focus on college basketball players who have struggled in their lives and studies and must play at the junior college level if they hope to play in the Division again.

If you prefer something more fictional in your diet for watching TV, I am personally excited to see how well Pacific Rim The film series is translated into anime in Pacific Rim: the black, releasing on March 4 (giant robots in the anime? It could work!). The irregular (March 26) has great Buffy / Sabrina Potential: A series about young paranormal crime fighters based on the famous “Baker Street Irregulars” by Sherlock Holmes. And then there is Moxie (March 3), a dramatic film about a girl who launches a ‘zine’ to expose sexism in her high school, which sounds quite culturally relevant and is also the directorial debut of one Amy Poehler.

Here’s everything else coming and going on Netflix in March 2021.
