New York COVID Update: Over 50s Eligible for COVID Vaccine Starting Tuesday in New York State

NEW YORK (WABC) – Governor Andrew Cuomo made a big announcement about vaccine eligibility in New York State, and starting Tuesday, residents age 50 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID vaccine.

The governor made the announcement at the start of his “Roll Up Your Sleeve” campaign on Monday, along with religious leaders from many different denominations.

“The vaccines will be available to people 50 and older, so we are decreasing the age as we vaccinate more people,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo also asked the religious community to partner with a vaccine provider to help people overcome doubts about vaccines and also to offer the vaccines in their places of worship.

“As we saw black experts across the country speak and as we saw that people are still affected, we cannot afford to wait,” said Reverend Al Sharpton. “We must do everything possible on the ground to save our people.”

The governor said he thought having religious leaders promote the vaccine would help with equity and reach minorities.

“That’s what ‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ is all about,” he said. “Ask the faith community, partner with the healthcare operator, get vaccinations at your facility, and we will provide vaccinations to any participating facility. Invite your congregation, invite your neighborhood, use your trust, use your relationship to get past this hesitation, etc. We have not yet achieved justice and equity in vaccines. “

Sharpton said religious leaders can play an important role in their communities.

“Houses of worship are also places of refuge and trust, and there is no better place for people to roll up their sleeves with confidence,” he said. “We need religious leaders who are up to the task and help save the lives of the people we are committed to serving.”

Cuomo was vaccinated last week by injecting a dose of Johnson & Johnson.
