New video emerges of failed migrant rescue try in Mediterranean Sea

New video has emerged of a failed rescue try within the Mediterranean. At least 5 African migrants drowned and 58 others have been injured final week when their rickety boat capsized whereas on its approach to Europe. 

It seems their supposed rescuers, members of the Libyan coast guard, have been attempting to seize them to return them to North Africa.

Johannes Bayer watched because the migrants fell between their flimsy dingy and the Libyan coast guard’s boat. Some have been trapped or barely treading water.

“For me it just felt like chaos — complete chaos,” Bayer stated.

Bayer is answerable for the German assist ship “Sea Watch,” which scrambled to pull individuals from the water and filmed the Libyans’ botched rescue.

“The boat you’re seeing there — it’s not a rescue boat. It’s a military patrol boat — it’s not made for rescues,” Bayer stated.

“The Libyans, they are hitting the people with ropes, they’re shouting the whole time — so they put a lot of — like more chaos into the situation. They are not calming the people down.”

With European Union backing, Italy has been coaching the Libyan coast guard to spice up its capabilities to stem migrant crossings. But Bayer stated the Libyans may be too aggressive in attempting to show migrants again.

At one level, a migrant hangs off the aspect of the ship and is kicked. He clings to a ladder because the Libyan vessel takes off. On the radio, there is a determined plea: the voice says, “You’re killing a person, you’re killing a person.”

So far, greater than 19,000 migrants have been rescued in Libyan waters this yr. But with the Libyan coast guard’s extra aggressive stance, some assist teams suspended operations within the Mediterranean as they felt it was too harmful to proceed.
