Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN that a new guide from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be expected “very soon” for those who have been vaccinated.
The White House chief medical adviser said Tuesday he would expect less stringent guidelines to arrive soon, given the progress of the United States’ vaccination program.
This update should “relax the rigor of the recommendations,” especially for people in the same family who have been vaccinated.
Fauci is not in charge of the CDC, but he has long been at the center of the federal response to the pandemic.
It’s unclear what the timeline for the new rules might be.
The hint about the upcoming directions came Tuesday in Fauci’s appearance on CNN’s “New Day.”
When asked by host Alisyn Camerota if fully vaccinated people should be able to reunite with their families indoors, Fauci said he would personally feel comfortable with that idea.
Fauci has had many discussions about this, some of which “were not very comfortable,” he said.
He said his position was: “If I am fully vaccinated and my daughter comes home and is fully vaccinated, do we really need to have the strict public health measure that we would have if I were a stranger who was not vaccinated?”
Fauci said it was “common sense” that “you don’t have to be so strict in your public health measures” once vaccines are part of the picture.
But the CDC wants to “sit down, talk about it, look at the data, and then come up with a science-based recommendation,” Fauci said, according to CNN.
On Monday, Fauci said fully vaccinated people shouldn’t dine indoors or go to the theater yet.
On the same day, New York Gov. Andy Cuomo said that state theaters would open in March. Fauci said a better strategy would be to wait until the fall when more people are vaccinated.
The CDC has already started to relax some rules for people who are fully vaccinated. On February 11, the agency said that fully vaccinated people did not have to follow quarantine rules.
