Netflix releases first trailer for ‘Shadow and Bone’

Since then game of Thrones ended in 2019, studios have been scrambling to find the next fantasy series with global appeal. Amazon Prime is working on its Lord of the Rings series, HBO is developing multiple IT HAS spin-offs and prequels, and now Netflix is betting on Shadow and bone, a new fantasy drama based on Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse novels around the world.

Shadow and bone is “set in a world ravaged by war where humble soldier and orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) has just unleashed extraordinary power that could be the key to liberating her country. With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is ripped from all she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as Grisha. But as he struggles to hone his power, he discovers that allies and enemies can be the same and that nothing in this luxurious world is what it seems. Dangerous forces are at play, including a gang of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive. “

There are many things I like about this trailer: a richly drawn fictional world, gorgeous special effects, and Prince Caspian himself, Ben Barnes as General Kirigan. The cast also includes Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey).

But for my money, the most exciting aspect of the series is that it is written, produced and directed by Eric Heisserer, who wrote the stunning 2016 sci-fi movie. Arrival. He also wrote Bird box Y Bloodshot. Netflix previously hit fandom gold with The Wizardso we’ll have to wait and see if Shadow and bone it can similarly capture our collective imagination.

Shadow and bone premieres on Netflix on April 23, 2021.
