Netflix news (and departures) in April 2021

Since then game of Thrones Rewrote HBO’s fortunes and became a worldwide phenomenon, Netflix has been chasing its own blockbuster fantasy adaptation for subscribers. They had some success in 2019 with the first, highly memeable season of The WizardBut a flowing empire cannot stand on a single pillar. So in April they will try again with Shadow and bone (April 23) based on a mega-popular series of young adult novels by Leigh Bardugo.

It’s an ambitious tacticHarry Potter Y Twilight Besides, Fantasy YA has not been the best incubator for successful adaptations—But the streamer tries to win over the fans by giving them everything they want, all at once: the show will adapt two series of related novels set in the same world, Grisha’s trilogy (a more traditional coming-of-age story) and the Six of crows duology (a robbery story about a Ocean’s Elevenstyle crew stealing a magic item). He will be successful? The trailer seems a bit generic, with lots of blue fire and ominous voiceovers, but the production values are certainly top-notch:

Other cool highlights of the month: Thunder force (April 9), an action comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer that will hopefully be more To spy and less Tammy (another film directed by McCarthy’s husband, Ben Falcone); Stowaway (April 22), a sci-fi movie with a great cast (Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Toni Collette) and a bleak premise (a crew on a journey into deep space discovers an additional passenger whose presence puts their mission carefully calibrated endangered) apparently taken from one of the most famous science fiction stories in history; The Mitchells vs. The machines (April 30), a goofy-looking animated movie about a robot apocalypse from the team behind In the Spider-Verse; and the second season of the guilty pleasure reality show The circle (April 14), which, in a change for Netflix, will release episodes week by week rather than in a large batch.

Here’s a list of everything arriving (and leaving) the streaming service in April.
