NASA Mars rover captures two impressive solar eclipses

We recently marveled at a Curiosity sight of rover of the moon of Mars Phobos attenuating the lights on the red planet after sunset. On Thursday, NASA shared a new look at that grim phenomenon from March 25, along with some dramatic GIFs from Phobos and more picturesque Deimos that pbad in front of the sun.

The camera mounted on the mast of Curiosity is equipped with solar filters that act as eclipse glbades, so you can stare at the sun.

The moons of Mars are quite small, with Phobos measuring 7 miles (11.5 kilometers) wide and Deimos only 1.5 miles (2.3 kilometers) wide. The eclipse of Phobos occurred on March 26.

Deimos walk in front of the sun took place on March 17.

Satellites look like dark spots that travel through a shiny disk.

These observations help scientists better understand the orbit of each moon around Mars. "There is still a margin of uncertainty in the orbits of both Martian moons, but that is reduced with each eclipse seen from the surface of the Red Planet," says NASA.
