Thank you, Google, for kindly keeping your remote press conference and up to the point.
Oddly, the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4 A5G phones – don’t confuse them – were given equal weight with a new, pretier Chromecast dongle (with remote) and a new smart speaker called Nest Audio.
We’ve already gotten the hands-on impressions of the new Chromecast, but you’ll have to wait a while for the speakers (the last time I heard our authors) and the Pixel phones, which are likely to be closer to launch date. For America (you are reading most), that will be on October 29. Other countries including the UK and Japan will land phones on 15 October.
The Pixel 5 is generally lower than the ‘flagship’ you’d expect, coming in at $ 599 when the devices are exceeding the $ 1,000 mark. This omits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 processor, instead using a 5G-capable Snapdragon 765G. Google also removed the Pixel 4’s Soli radar radar module, meaning there is no face unlock or touchless motion sense control (but barely used) as seen in the Pixel 4.
Google’s hardware chief called it his own: These are phones designed for the economic downturn. Rick Osterloh told the BBC that it was a deliberate choice to offer 5G-enabled phones at “affordable prices”.
Why? Google has not seen the COVID-19 crisis. No, the company was made aware of the success of its Pixel 3a phone last year. We, collectively, loved them and probably wrote a little about middleweight phones with killer cameras.
They have apparently doubled phone sales for Google. Who wouldn’t want to try to replicate that success?
Yes, this is basically just what we were expecting.
A lot of information about the Pixel 5 was already leaked, and we were also aware that it would be included in the Pixel 4a, which came out this summer. Yes, we got the same style screen, with a pinhole front-facing camera, and as expected, the Pixel 5 comes with a 6-inch, 2340 x 1080 screen. There is no XL model this year, just a single model.
Google is also bringing back the fingerprint sensor which disappeared from last year’s Pixel 4. It is a Face Unlock feature that did not set the world on fire. Also missing this year are the odd touchless controls that were powered by an ultra-wideband radar sensor above the screen. Pixel 5 has a dual camera at the back. But instead of going with the standard and telephoto arrangement, Google swapped telephoto lenses for ultra-wide angle shooter.
If you are interested, you will have to wait until the end of October to get one.
It comes in a variety of colors.
Google’s Nest Audio is a fabric-clad speaker similar to Nest Mini, but it means better sound. According to Google, it has 50 percent more bass and 75 percent more volume than the predecessor. You can add two Nest audio speakers for stereo sound, a la Apple’s HomePods or Sonos Systems. Nest Audio will be available in the US from October 5 for $ 100.
Except to see it in November.
Pixel 4a 5G lending has more expensive features than both its name and Pixel 5 Google also announced on Wednesday. It is equipped with Snapdragon 765G processor and camera setup from Pixel 5, as well as 128GB of storage. But to keep the price down on this device, it has a larger 6.2-inch screen, which does not have the same 90Hz refresh rate as the Pixel 5 display.
It adds a headphone jack, but omits other features like a water-resistant casing and wireless charging, and has a slightly smaller 3,885mAh battery than the Pixel 5. Still, it looks like a great option for the price, although Verizon is charging $ 100 more for the equipped version to access its mmWave-based 5G network.
Google TV is back, but you don’t remember.
Google also refreshed its Chromecast streaming device, and the latest version includes a remote control. The beefed up device now includes support for Dolby Vision HDR, and while it looks like the outgoing Chromecast Ultra, it is slimmer and comes in different colors. Its small remote includes volume and input controls that can be mapped to your TV, as well as direct access buttons for YouTube and Netflix, and a button for voice control using an assistant. The new Chromecast is available with six months of Netflix for $ 50, or $ 90.
The device also marks the return of Google TV – but not the predecessor to Android TV. Instead, Google is using the name to describe its interface that provides access to other streaming apps such as Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu and others. On mobile devices, it is also trending as a new name for Play Movies and TV. You can see your purchased content there and access the watchlist that queues the content regardless of which app it actually belongs to.
