DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) You may have noticed the full moon this weekend, but there was something even more special or "super" about it.

This was the first and the only complete super moon of the year. The moon appears to be larger and brighter due to its orbit around the Earth.

The orbit of the moon around the Earth is elliptical. This means that sometimes the moon is farther from the Earth and other times it is closer.

This weekend the moon was at its closest point to Earth or perigee.

At 3:45 am on Monday the moon was approximately 222,000 miles from Earth The moon appears to be approximately 14% larger and approximately 7% brighter.

The next super moon will be January 1, 2018.

We will also see two blue moons in 2018. That is when we will see two full moons in a calendar month.
