Tuesday’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Toronto Raptors appeared to be uneventful. Five of the best players in the game dated LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Andre Drummond, Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet injured, so it should have been a somewhat quiet night in Tampa Bay as the Lakers begin a trip down the East Coast.

Instead of? Things got irritated very quickly. It all started in a counterattack from the first quarter of OG Anunoby. Lakers guard Dennis Schroder fouled him badly, and his teammate Gary Trent Jr. Montrezl Harrell came in to defend his teammate, both teams got into a fight, and when all was said and done, Harrell and Anunoby had been expelled for their parts in the fight.

Both Trent and Harrell threw shoves, but Trent appeared to escape expulsion as he was not the instigator. Anunoby was, at least from Toronto’s perspective, so each team lost one player. Overall, the Lakers are slightly better equipped to handle this tradeoff. They had a huge advantage at the time of the fight, and while they trust their stars more than the Raptors, they have more depth at the end of their bench. The Raptors now only have two of their top five players: Trent and Siakam.

Things calmed down from there and the game moved on. The Lakers and Raptors have no pre-existing rivalry, and the players involved have not fought before. All it took was one physical play to get both teams going, but thankfully, emotions seem to have run their course.
