Minnesota patients alarmed by the shortage of medical marijuana

A distribution failure in one of Minnesota's two medical marijuana providers has left some patients with little or no offer for the treatment of conditions such as chronic pain, epileptic seizures and Tourette's syndrome.

A patient, Katie Kennedy, said she called LeafLine Labs on Monday because she had no cannabis left to treat her chronic pain and had only a two-day supply of autism and her son's Tourette. He said a LeafLine representative responded that he did not have any available until Friday, although he later provided a small amount for his son to spend the week.

"I will have a lot of pain by the end of the week," Kennedy said. who suffers from fibromyalgia and chronic back problems.

In a written statement, LeafLine's executive director, Dr. Andrew Bachman, blamed the temporary shortage of vacations and delays in an outside lab that must test its cannabis products before they can be distributed. LeafLine closed its Eagan facilities during the week and directed customers to its St. Paul facility.

"LeafLine Labs has a lot of inventory, but due to some unforeseen laboratory delays, including recent vacations, we are still waiting for our certificate of badysis to launch more products to our patients," he said.

Kennedy was among the users of medicinal marijuana products in Minnesota who complained on a social media page about the shortage and who said that LeafLine offered a variety of excuses.

Patrick McClellan, who uses medical marijuana for muscular dystrophy and advocated Minnesota's first medical marijuana law in 2014, said patients received several explanations this week. Some said that LeafLine experienced a shortage of bottles, while others said that LeafLine blamed a surge of patients or the need to replace old equipment.

However, McClellan said the disruption points to the weakness in the Minnesota program, which restricts the sale of marijuana drugs to two state-authorized distributors. Minnesota Medical Solutions is the other provider.

Minnesota restricts medical marijuana to oils, liquids and pills for the treatment of 11 conditions.

McClellan said that interruptions in supply could lead some patients to return to opioid prescriptions to control pain – because they could not tolerate their old doses after being out of them for so long and would be at risk of suffering An overdose.

"That could be extremely dangerous," he said.

State regulators of doctors marijuana industry could not be reached immediately on Wednesday morning. This story will be updated when your response is available.

Kennedy said that his son's medical marijuana is technically for his Tourette syndrome, but really for the symptoms caused by his autism. She said she expects state officials to add autism to the list of qualifying conditions later this year. She said that LeafLine has always been useful so far.

"Running out of medication shows that we need more options in the state," he said.
