ANN ARBOR: Like it or not, here come more night games.
Michigan will open 2018 under the lights against Notre Dame, starting its game scheduled for September 1, 2018 against the Fighting Irish. at 7:30 p.m. ET, was announced on Thursday.
The game, scheduled for the Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, will be televised nationally on NBC.
JUST: Our seasonal opening game at Notre Dame next season will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
– Michigan Football (@UMichFootball) December 7, 2017 The announcement comes after Michigan tied a program record with three regular-season night games in 2017. A $ 2.64 billion contract between the Big Ten and its TV partners ESPN / ABC, FOX and CBS (for men) allows networks to dictate the start -time windows.
That's different here with NBC, which owns the rights to all the football games at Notre Dame's house.
In addition, Michigan is eligible to host a night game in 2018, after hosting two in 2017 (Michigan State, Minnesota), and will be exposed to the possibility of playing additional nighttime games on the road.
The Wolverines never played a game at night (starting at 6 pm local time or later) more than three times in a season, even when you consider the post-season bowl appearances.
With the season opener at Notre Dame now a night game, Michigan could eclipse that in 2018.
