UMbad men's hockey defense and Hobey Baker Award winner Cale Makar signed a three-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. He will immediately join Avalanche, who is in the middle of his Western Conference first-round playoff series with Calgary Flames. The third game of the series is Monday night in Colorado.
Makar, 20, was born in Calgary and took UMbad to his first participation in the national championship of Division 1 in the history of the program, where the Minutemen lost to Minnesota-Duluth 3-0 on Saturday. Makar had 16-33–49 totals in his second season at UMbad and 21-49-70 totals in two seasons with the program. He was selected by the Avalanche with the fourth overall selection in the 2017 NHL Draft, the highest selection of a UMbad player.
