My burning curiosity, therefore, has turned to: is there really any way these cars can live up to the absurd pedestal on which they have been placed? Porsche has dominated the sports coupe game since the ’60s. And so the day has come to finally drive one. The keys to my friend and talented photographer Kevin McCauley’s 1980 911 SC were thrown at me. It is the ideal presentation, an excellent baptism. Porsche has made a wide variety of amazing sports cars over the decades, but everything about an air-cooled 911 is iconic. The sound of the flat-six, the iconic shape of the fastback greenhouse, virtually unchanged since the inception of the platform in 1963, and the PORSCHE Heckeblende taillights immediately evoke great moments in motorsports, in the movies, even in theaters. games.

We think similarly: Kevin speaks highly of the styling of his 911, being a visually minded person like me. The classic fastback profile and beautifully rendered C-pillars draw you in on an aesthetic level few cars can dream of, and I can’t disagree with it. His select visual modifications – Martini’s tribute stripes with option code M42, a rear spoiler removed to improve the profile, and gold OEM European-spec Porsche wheels – make his argument that much stronger.

Nor was he born a Porsche fanatic. The days on the track in an old 350Z were his start as an enthusiast, and when the keys to a Porsche were thrown at him for a few laps, his life was forever changed. From the Z, he immediately went to a used Boxster S, and finally to this superb 911, which I’m pretty sure it will age with. The insect had bitten him. I’m afraid the same thing could happen to me.

In a way, I don’t want to like this car, in part because the internet works on the opposite side. I slide into the driver’s seat and can already feel the objective truth overwhelm me, much to my chagrin. The group is timeless and surprising, it could be from 1950 or 2020. The seats fit my lanky frame well with surprisingly luxurious bounce. The road ahead is framed between domed fenders; it feels like you’re lining up a Messerschmitt through a reflector sight when rounding a curve, with how well the front of the car frames the view and gives you a heads up in your direction as you turn towards the stem. But! Maybe I can still find a way to blame once I really get going here.

But then I change gears and do turn to the power, launching the car into a smooth, wide forty-five-degree curve, not sure how the relatively inexpensive tires will perform. I know from second-hand stories, and a basic understanding of physics, that putting a three-liter engine on the rear axle tends to be a nimble experience. I would very much like inertia not to derail Kevin’s pride and joy, so I go ahead full of anxiety. My fears are unfounded. The car responds with poise, unlike any other it has ever driven. I’ve driven cars from the 70s, cars from the 80s, cars from the 90s, even modern machinery, and none of them feel quite as raw while still offering a modicum of comfort. Oh no. He got better and I adore him. This is where my thoughts become trivial. How do you tell a new story about falling in love with a car that has been proclaimed a champion of performance decades before you were born?

And so yeah, the car blew me away. It’s undoubtedly one of the most competent sporty SUVs ever built, and the few mechanical modifications Kevin has made to this example, namely some nice tubes to allow the throaty three-liter to sing and a short-throw shifter. , they make it basically impossible to find a fault when attacking some curves or throwing it down an entrance ramp.
