The Rams completed a trade with the Lions on Saturday to acquire quarterback Matthew Stafford, and it didn’t take Stafford long to become acquainted with Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay.
According to MMQB’s Albert Breyer, Stafford and McVay had dinner shortly after the trade was agreed on Saturday. As the NFL world reacted to a true blockbuster deal, the new Ram duo enjoyed dinner in Los Angeles, Mexico, with Stafford’s wife Kelly and McVay’s fiancée Veronica. It is likely that Stafford and McVay will dive into a movie together in the coming weeks, but more important matters will be awaited on Saturday.
Breyer wrote on Sunday night, “Once the deal was settled, LA sat down to dinner about 1,100 miles southeast of McVay and Stafford.” “The coach and his new quarterback happened last week in Cabo among a number of NFL guys – Saints coach Sean Peyton and QB Drew Tree, Ramus LT Andrew Whitworth and others were nearby, also in the last few days.”
So how did Stafford and McVay get together so quickly? Kelly Stafford is there to thank in a big way.
McVay is a friend of Bill’s receivers coach Chad Hall, brother of Kelly Stafford. The connection established a friendly relationship between Staffords and McVay in recent years, and upon completion of the trade, the two couples joined Cabo to celebrate.
Saturday’s celebration dinner almost didn’t come. Several teams were involved in the Stafford sweepstakes per breaker, including Washington, Carolina, Indianapolis and San Francisco. Both Washington and Carolina reportedly offered the first round of 2021, and the football team also allegedly made their 2021 third round offer. But ultimately, Los Angeles provided the biggest pick to bring Stafford and McVay together for one of several dinners (and perhaps playoff wins) in the coming years.
