Mass graves ‘of ISIL victims’ present in Iraq’s Hawijah | Iraq News


Mbad graves containing not less than 400 suspected ISIL victims, many sporting jail uniforms, have been present in northern Iraq.

The websites have been found on Saturday close to Rashad air base near the group’s former stronghold, Hawijah, 45km west of Kirkuk.

Iraqi forces recaptured the city of Hawijah and surrounding areas from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, often known as ISIS) group in October. It was certainly one of their final strongholds in Iraq.

Rashad air base, positioned about 30km south of Hawijah, was utilized by ISIL as a coaching camp and logistic base.

Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, mentioned it was a typical ISIL tactic to imprison and execute anyone who was in opposition to their rule.

“The graves are a significant find, most of all for the families of the victims who have been seeking closure for years,” Khan reported.

“According to locals, ISIL turned the navy base into an execution floor. Iraqi authorities have been cataloging precisely how many individuals died underneath ISIL rule and are actually investigating what number of victims are in these explicit graves,” he added.

“Authorities are relying on local people who took detailed notes during ISIL rule, handed them over, and showed authorities where these graves are located.”

The discovery of the mbad graves was not the primary after the collapse of ISIL in Iraq and Syria.

In August, Iraqi navy investigators found two mbad graves close to a former ISIL jail outdoors Mosul that contained the our bodies of 500 victims.

Earlier that month, Associated Press information company performed a survey that concluded that ISIL buried 1000’s of their victims in not less than 72 mbad graves throughout Iraq and Syria.
